Glitter Handprint Christmas Ornament

For baby's first Christmas this year, we made pretty handprint ornaments for the grandparents.  They turned out great!  I especially love that the glittery goodness is inside the ornament, so glitter won't get all over the place every year.  DIY directions are below.

You will need:

Plain clear glass ornaments, large enough to fit a handprint.  This one came in a 4-pack at Michael's.
Glitter in your choice of color.  I used red, obviously.
Acrylic paint in your choice of color.  I chose white.
Ribbon.
A cooperative baby, and maybe an adult helper to assist with the handprint.
Piece of paper to make a funnel for pouring glitter.
Damp towel to wipe up paint mistakes.
Paintbrush (a thin one to write name/year on the back, and a larger flat one to paint baby's hand)
Pledge FloorCare Multi-Surface cleaner (yes, seriously).
               It's this one:

Now you're ready to get started.

First, remove the hanger top from the ornament.  Pour some Pledge into the ornament, swirling it around to coat the entire inside of the ornament.  The Pledge cap sprays a little bit, so the neatest way to go is to place the ornament on top of the cap, and then turn the whole thing over to dispense the liquid.  If you are left with an excess of liquid in the ornament, you can pour it out.

Then, using a paper funnel, pour glitter into the ornament and swirl it around.  It will stick to the liquid.  Be sure to cover the entire inside of the ornament.  Pour out the excess glitter.  Then rest the ornament upside-down to dry.  I laid them in the original ornament package for this.

Once they are dry (I waited until the next day), it's time to add the handprint!  Choose a contrasting color of acrylic paint, and lightly brush the paint onto baby's hand, being sure to cover the palm and each finger.  Then, (this is where an adult helper comes in handy) carefully press baby's hand against the front of the ornament.  If you smudge, it's no big deal... Wet acrylic paint wipes right off the glass with a damp paper towel!  Just reapply paint if needed, and try again!

You can also sprinkle some glitter on the wet acrylic paint if desired.  I added clear glitter to the handprint, but it looked great without the extra glitter too.

Once the front is dry, you can paint baby's name, year, or a holiday message on the back.

Replace the metal ornament top (being careful not to scrape the glitter off inside the ornament), and tie a ribbon to it for hanging from the tree.

Now, sit back and admire your gorgeous keepsake ornament!
